Laser Calibration

Ball Bar Check

In a fast-paced manufacturing environment, the need for an accurate assessment of your CNC machine is mandatory. Any loss in accuracy (in both machine positioning and repeatability accuracy) is detrimental to the machine performance and this in turn affects the “finish” & quality of the end product. As machines age, the chances for wear & tear are high and therefore, in place of replacing the affected components, a professional diagnosis (& compensation where applicable) is highly recommended.

Spintec Engineering, a renowned spindle service center, can assist with solving the above mentioned issues by performing comprehensive laser calibration / ball bar checks for your machines.

Conforming to ISO 9000 (quality) and ISO 17025 (calibration) standards and equipped with Renishaw™ equipment (XL-80 and XC-80), Spintec Engineering can assist the end user with setting up and performing positioning accuracy checks for 3 axes (VMC) and 2 axes for CNC lathe machines respectively. If parameters are not within the desired tolerances, compensation will be done immediately.

In a situation where the tolerances are truly beyond the preferred range (for compensation), adequate machine reconditioning (e.g. replacement of leadscrew/ ball screw support bearings) will be necessary. This information will be conveyed to the client via a report (sample format as attached).

Do note that various CNC controller platforms are supported, including FANUC, SIEMENS, HEIDENHEIN and MITSUBISHI (amongst others), during the entire calibration sequence.

Conforming to ISO 9000 (quality) and ISO 17025 (calibration) standards and equipped with Renishaw™ equipment (QC20-W), Spintec Engineering can assist the end user with setting up and performing circular path concentricity (ball bar) checks.

It must be noted that if the CNC machine’s positioning performance is top notch (OEM specifications), the circle traced out by the machine would exactly match its preprogrammed circular path.

However, this isn’t always the case and there are several possible causes of such errors: backlash, servo mismatch, etc.

The ball bar is a high precision tool, equipped with precision balls on both ends. The data that is collected from this exercise is used to calculate the overall positioning accuracy (for circularity and circular deviation).

Spintec Engineering will deploy a proven 4 stage testing process:

  1. Setup of the ball bar kit
  2. Capture of data
  3. Analysis (in accordance to various international standards: ISO 230-4, ASME B5.54 where applicable)
  4. Diagnosis (Spintec Engineering will provide a type-specific report, individually customized for the customer)

Spintec Advantage
